Guidelines for bridging the gap between literal sentence meaning and communicative intention

چکیده
By the performance of language acts, participants in an organisation initiate action and report about results. An unambiguous interpretation of these language acts is important for the modelling of business communication. In the actual realisation of business conversations the communicative intention of the speaker often differs from the grammatical meaning of the sentence. This paper focuses on the gap between the meaning of a speaker’s utterance and the meaning of the sentence in more detail. Several phenomena are discussed, which play a dominant role in the expression of action initiating language acts and language acts that report about action. Based on these phenomena some guidelines are proposed, which stand at the interface between the grammatical meaning of the sentence and the communicative function of the expression involved in the encompassing business conversation. These guidelines are helpful for the analyst who uses a communication centred modelling approach in analysing organisations.

Literal meaning and context categories in the attribution of communicative intentions: A developmental study
Studies in developmental literature claim that for young children context plays a more important role than literal meaning in comprehending a speaker's communicative intention. The present study evaluates this claim for different categories of context in children aged 3 to 7 years. In particular, we analyze contexts pertaining to the categories we define as follows: Access, Space, Time, Discour...

متن کاملUnderstanding and Literal Meaning
The debate on literal meaning in theories of natural language processing has focused on two main issues: (1) Are there conditions by which the literal meaning of a sentence can be appropriately identified?; and (2) Is there some evaluation of literal meaning during the interpretation of natural language utterances? My article, “Literal meaning and psychological theory,” (Gibbs, 1984) attempted ...
متن کاملPragmatics, Modularity and Mind-reading
The central problem for pragmatics is that sentence meaning vastly underdetermines speaker’s meaning. The goal of pragmatics is to explain how the gap between sentence meaning and speaker’s meaning is bridged. This paper defends the broadly Gricean view that pragmatic interpretation is ultimately an exercise in mind-reading, involving the inferential attribution of intentions. We argue, however...
